The
Boys and Girls Homes of NC logo was designed by Debbie Conway who currently
resides in Whiteville, NC, and teaches art in the Whiteville school
system. Recently, when asked to recall designing the logo, Debbie said,
"Wow, I'm really going to have to sprain my brain to remember much about
the logo. I think I did that in about 1978 or 79! We (she and
husband Rob who was an employee of B&GH at the time) came to Boys Homes in
1976 and I was pregnant with [our oldest child] Chris and stayed home with him
and then Laura, too. I was glad to have something to do relating to art
and I did a few things for the development department. I have forgotten
who asked me to do it, but they wanted something that was representative
of all children. I think that they had just started taking girls at the
Huntersville campus- thus the girl in the logo. At the time I did it, I
didn't dream that they would still be using it almost 25 years later! I
don't think I modeled the faces after any residents there then, I think I just
made up generic faces! That's about all I can recall about it- I remember
that I was surprised to see it used on so many things- I think they told me they
wanted it for letterhead."
The logo continues to represent Boys and Girls Homes on stationery,
displays,
vehicles, etc., and most prominently, a tiled version on the back wall of the
stage in the William Horney Fellowship Hall of the Leamon Rogers Memorial
Chapel. The logo is lighted by spotlights at meetings and is a beautiful
representation of the homes. A modified version contains the wording
"Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina, Inc." is used for more
specific identification of Boys and Girls Homes.
