Lake Waccamaw Boys Home Alumni Reunion On Saturday, October 13, several members of the alumni group met for their annual reunion on the campus of Boys and Girls Homes. Members of this group share a number of bonds including their stay as residents of the home. Grownups all now, these men and their families are active and contributing members of their communities. On October 13, they came together for a time of fellowship and sharing memories of their time at Boys Home. Meeting in the newly constructed chapel and having a famous Boys and Girls Homes fried chicken dinner were highlights of the day! The members, some with family, toured the campus, conducted alumni business and enjoyed the alumni website that contains many pictures of younger days and activities at Boys Home. Emergency
Center construction proceeding Construction of the building
that will provide an emergency haven for children having to be removed from
their homes on an immediate basis is proceeding. When completed, this
facility will allow children who have to be removed from their home because they
are in eminent danger a place to live and receive care until a more permanent
determination can be made as to what is best for them. Scheduled for
opening on December 1, the facility can serve twenty children and can be divided
into facilities for boys and girls. The children may live in the center up
to ninety days. Staffing is currently underway for the opening of the
program of care for children placed in the center.
Cottage
Upgrades In other construction work, improvements to the
cottages at Boys and Girls Homes that will make them more attractive and safer
is underway. In some of the cottages, special work is being done to bring
them up to code as "mental health" facilities. Pictured at left,
workmen are working to make improvements to Lions Cottage.
Caring Angels Opportunities for giving by way of credit card payments and by automatic checking account drafts are in progress. Called "Caring Angels," persons desiring to utilize these means can provide background care for the children served by Boys and Girls Homes of NC.
Pecans on the ground
One of the more famous features of Boys and Girls Homes
are the numerous pecan trees that dot the landscape. The trees have always
been a resource to the homes, providing beauty, shade, and in the fall of the
year, thousands of pounds of pecans! Vice President for Institutional
Advancement Bill Thompson says it appears there will be another good crop of
pecans this year. The pecans are collected and used in the cottages for
cooking and snacks. The remainder are made available for sale to the
public. If you have any interest in purchasing Boys and Girls Homes
pecans, telephone 910-646-3083.
Forum
at the lake The Boys and Girls Home chapel provides more than
just a place for the needs of the children to be met! The chapel is also
used as a gathering place for the community, as indicated on this handmade sign
placed along the entrance to Lake Waccamaw. Recently, the chapel was used
as a meeting place for candidates for local political offices to greet their
constituents and share their reasons for wanting to be elected. Boys and
Girls Homes is proud to be a good neighbor to Lake Waccamaw and the surrounding
communities.
New Country Store opens A second Country Store was opened October 13 in Lumberton, NC along the service road at the exit for hwy. 211. Called the "Boys and Girls Home Store", it is next to The Cracker Barrel restaurant in Lumberton. It contains many bargains and is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday (closed to the public on Tuesday and Thursday for restocking and rearranging). Persons wishing to contribute items in the Lumberton area can take them to the store in Lumberton rather than bringing them to Lake Waccamaw. The same friendly service and bargains can be found at this newly opened location!
