Campus meetings. Spring normally brings a
host of visitors to the campus of Boys and Girls Homes. This year is no
different. On April 13, Jaycee President Tom Cramer and the North Carolina
Jaycees
held their Executive Committee and Board meetings in the fellowship hall of the
Leamon Rogers Memorial Chapel. The Chapel will also serve as host to
Governor Harriet Covington and the NC District East Civitans on Saturday, April
27. That same weekend, the Boys and Girls Homes Board of Directors and
Executive Committee will hold its quarterly meeting in the Chapel. In the
picture at right, Jaycee State President Tom Cramer calls to order the Jaycee
Board Meeting held April 13. Boys and Girls Homes is fortunate to have its
supporters visit the campus.
Another
group of visitors came to campus on April 18. Lead by Brenda Orders of
Southeastern Community College, visitors from the country of Moldova were on
campus as part of their International Relations tour. The group learned
about programs of care for needy children provided by the home while touring the
campus. They were accompanied by their interpreters, a brother and sister
from Romania.
The Mayflies are here! Anyone who knows
anything about Lake Waccamaw knows that a unique event occurs this time of the
year. It
lasts only a few days and can be amusing, annoying and exciting
all at once. The Mayfly, a wispy insect with delicate wings makes its
presence felt. The insects
emerge to recreate and die soon afterward (one
may wish to read about this amazing creature to get a greater
understanding). They cover everything (as can be seen on this picture of one of our autos), can get in your hair, pitch on your
clothes, and walking outside is an adventure. This phenomenon is another of those Lake
Waccamaw events that add to the color and excitement of the area!
Campus changing. In just a few days,
the warmth of spring has
brought on some wondrous changes to the campus. The pecan trees have
gotten leaves and this alone has transformed the
view!
What a beautiful place is the Boys and Girls Homes campus, especially in
Spring! In addition to God's work, the people have been busily making
changes. Renovations to Flemington Hall continue as workers replace the
deteriorated front porch columns and parts of its roof. They are also
changing the look by enclosing a portion of the porch.
Recreation happenings. Rocco
Wadsworth has many duties but he treasures working with the children. When
not involved in the myriad campus maintenance projects, he is planning some
activity for or working with the children. According to Rocco, the
children are involved in a number of intramural activities including pool and
volleyball tournaments. They enjoy these opportunities to interact with
each
other and showcase their athletic skills. On the subject of volleyball,
Rocco conducts the Time Warner Cable Volleyball Tournament Series to benefit
Boys and Girls Homes. This year's series will be held June 8, June 15, and
June 20 at Capt. Bill's Backyard Grill in Wilmington, NC. In the picture
at right, Rocco looks over a brochure promoting the tournament. Anyone
interested in participating can contact Rocco at 910-646-3083.
Participants and sponsorships are welcomed!
