History  The first written account of Lake Waccamaw was made by John Bartram, a botanist serving King George III.  The area was colonized in 1745 by John Powell, but was called Flemington in 1846.  This was changed to Lake Waccamaw in 1890 with a population of 50 people, a hotel and a post office.

 

Government  Lake Waccamaw is governed by a mayor, town board, and an administrative manager.

 

Services  Lake Waccamaw provides fire, rescue, and police protection, as well as water, sewer, and sanitation services.

lake waccamaw resort areaState Park  Lake Waccamaw is the largest of the natural Carolina Bay Lakes with an estimated age of 250,000 years.  The lake has a total surface of 8,936 acres, 273 acres now made into a state park.  The master plan calls for a total of 1,662 acres.  Current facilities include a picnic area with tables and grills, a 375-foot pier, hiking trails, and pit toilets.

Cultural Resources  Housed in the circa 1900 former Atlantic Coast Line depot, the Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum is located just off old Highway 74-76 (hwy. 214) on Flemington Drive.  The public is invited to visit during specified hours (Call 919-646-3700 for information.) and to attend activities which deal with nature, wildlife, local history, art, storytelling, and canoe outings.  The museum collections include old photographs, diaries, historical departments, and natural history specimens of lake and surrounding environs.

Cable service  to Lake Waccamaw and surrounding areas is available.

Apartments and Bed and Breakfasts are available.  Motels are available in nearby Whiteville.
