The Boys and Girls Homes of NC Alumni Association held its 2003 annual reunion Saturday, September 14.  Although it was a rainy day, all accounts indicate a good time was enjoyed by all.  Reports indicate that 73 alumni, former staff, and family registered for the day.  We have a few pictures that were sent by David Herring and others "in process" that will be placed here for everyone's enjoyment soon.  Thanks to all Alumni, their family, and former staff who made the reunion.  Those who could not attend were missed!

Alumni Reunion 2002 Report - by Bill Thompson

Thirty-eight alumni attended the Boys and Girls Homes Alumni Reunion held September 14, 2002.   Despite the rain every thing went extremely well, though campus tours were made in vans so everyone could stay dry.  The morning business meeting was well attended.  After a review of the bylaws, it was decided to make a renewed effort to establish alumni regions and name directors for those regions to encourage more local gatherings of alumni, in addition to the annual meeting.  The current officers will be meeting soon to begin planning.  Much of the time was taken up in general fellowship with one another.  The alumnus who came the longest distance was Pete Stafford (Watkins) who came all the way from California.  The oldest resident in terms of time at Boys and Girls Homes was David Love who was here for a little over nine years.  As Alumni President Gary Faircloth was unable to attend due to the opening of his new business in Battle Creek, Michigan, Vice President David Herring presided at the Saturday evening banquet.  He did a superb job!  In addition to great food, the group was entertained by several of the current girl’s cottages residents, who performed their rendition of “Lean on Me.”  The girls were a little nervous about singing for the group since they had heard so much about the former Boys Home Choir.  But in true Boys and Girls Homes fashion, the guys supported the group with a big round of applause for their efforts.  A surprise performance by Arthur Thompson (now “Dr.” Arthur Thompson) was one of the highlights of the evening.  As a resident and member of the Boys Home Choir, Arthur was accustomed to singing on the spur of the moment and he did an excellent job that evening. Incidentally, Arthur has just returned from a singing tour in Paris, France.  Another familiar singer was former choir director Ed Miller.  At the close of the dinner Ed asked everybody to join together in singing while Ed’s wife Katie accompanied on the piano.  It made us all feel good to sing together again and to have Ed and Katie back in their familiar roles.  Larry Hewett, Boys and Girls Homes Director of Civic Club Development, gave a good overview of the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina website and plans for the future.  Mason Smith, Chaplain for the Leamon Rogers Chapel and a real fan of Jerry Clower, gave and entertaining and meaningful speech for the group as well.  A moving event during the evening was the presentation of the first Distinguished Alumnus Award, presented by Boys and Girls Homes President Stuart Sherman to Jerry Parrish, who currently serves as Chairman of the Boys and Girls Homes Board of Directors.  Jerry was recognized not only for his many contributions of time, effort and money to Boys and Girls Homes, but also for his demonstration of personal commitment to his family and community. In accepting the award with his wife Faye at his side, Jerry attributed his commitment to those goals to the guidance he had received while a resident at Boys Home.  In further honor, a duplicate of the plaque received by Jerry will be placed on the Alumni wall in the fellowship hall.  Overall, this was one of the best-attended reunions ever.  Many at this year’s gathering had not attended any of the previous reunions.  Alumni officers are already starting to make plans for next year!
