Success Through Partnership...the importance of civic clubs in caring for at-risk children! This care also guarantees that the children have a chance in reaching their potential and living the American dream. Civic Clubs have had and continue to have, an immense impact on the efforts of Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina to "meet the changing needs of the children of North Carolina." Since 1954, the very beginning, Civic Clubs have been at the forefront of providing the leadership necessary for children to receive care, training, discipline, and hope at Boys and Girls Homes. Click this link to read about the initial involvement of some of our civic friends. These and similar events begin the civic club odyssey with Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina. From construction of the cottages to providing on-going funding, the partnership of Civic Clubs and children has been truly unique. Your support has put roofs over their heads, food on their tables and clothes on their backs. The more than 3000 children who have come and gone are better than they would have been if you hadn't taken the time to extend your hand at a time of need. Every day, we experience successes even in small ways. Whether it is a slight smile, a passing grade, or opening your club provided Christmas presents, these children maybe for the first time experience what love means. That someone does, indeed, care. Our wish is that you could, first hand, experience these joys. Some of you do through campus visits or our visits to your gatherings. Success Through Partnership...Your commitment to continue your care for at risk children! A brief history Boys Home (as we were first known) purchased the F.B. Gault home at Lake Waccamaw in 1956. The property included 15 acres, a colonial home, and several other buildings. In 1958, North Carolina Civitan built the first cottage, Civitan Cottage, on the property at Lake Waccamaw. Other civic groups followed suit with the construction of Lions Cottage by North Carolina Lions in 1960, Jaycee Cottage by the North Carolina Jaycees in 1962, Kiwanis Cottage by the Carolinas District Kiwanis Clubs in 1964, Rotary Cottage by the North Carolina Rotary Clubs in 1966, and Optimist Cottage by the North Carolina Optimist Clubs in 1968. Support Civitan, Extension and Cooperative Association members, General Federation of Women's Club members, Jaycees, Kiwanians, Lions, Optimists, Rotarians, their junior organizations (and other smaller groups) continue providing support to Boys and Girls Homes. Their support comes corporately and individually in financial gifts, gifts of property and other items usable by the home, inviting our children to participate in club events and activities, visiting the campus and sharing an evening and a meal with the children, telling others of our mission and encouraging them to help, and telling us they appreciate our efforts to make a difference in the lives of our children. Boys and Girls Homes is very appreciative of our civic club friends! |
