Climbing The Next Mountain

A famous adventurer once reached the top of one the tallest mountains in the Himalayas. As he gazed out at the view from the mountaintop, he mused to his Sherpa guide, “This is an awesome achievement, the culmination of all my strength and energies. What could I possibly do that could equal such a feat?” The guide responded, “Conquer the next mountain”. That is the new challenge facing the Optimists of North Carolina since they have reached the One Million Dollar Endowment goal set so many years ago. The earnings from the principle of that endowment will go to a program of care enabling hundreds of residents from the Optimist cottage to reach their own goals. The next mountain is the Children’s Care Fund. The means of reaching that goal is the same that enabled them to reach the top of the endowment mountain: the 5 x 12 program. The ultimate goal is $150,000 per year for the operation of the Optimist cottage. This year’s challenge is to raise $40,000 through the 5 x 12 program in combination with other efforts and approximately $80,000 in earnings from the endowment. The tools needed to climb this new mountain are the same as those used to conquer the first mountain. The same motivation of caring will push Optimists to new heights and in so doing raise the hopes, dreams and accomplishments of those affected children even higher.
