There
are hundreds of children in North Carolina who need out-of-home care. Often the
families these children come from f During the Federal fiscal year (FFY) 2005, an estimated 3.3 million referrals, involving the alleged maltreatment of approximately 6 million children, were made to Child Protective Service agencies. During the Federal fiscal year 2005, an estimated 899,000 children in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico were determined to be victims of abuse or neglect. An allegation of child abuse and neglect is substantiated when county departments of social services find the allegations to be true. When the reports are substantiated, it is likely the children will be removed from their home and placed with foster parents.
