Cottages The lakeside campus (residential program) promotes a family atmosphere at Boys and Girls Homes of NC. Six cottages (Civitan, Jaycee, Kiwanis, Lions, Optimist, and Rotary) for boys make up the "Boys Home" part of our campus. Each cottage can accommodate up to eight residents (and one pre-placement child) and is equipped with its own recreation room, kitchen, and dining/living room.
The three girls cottages (Huntersville, Wakefield, and Stango), that comprise "Girls Haven," can also accommodate eight girls with two additional beds for pre-placement visits. The girls cottages are much like the boys cottages except that the activities area has been centralized in the Girls Activity Center.
All the cottages are supervised by permanent, live-in adult teaching staff. Cottage staff have separate apartments within the cottages. Residents enjoy all meals together in their cottages, family-style, and assist with chores and daily maintenance much as they would in their own homes. In the high school cottages, the residents and staff do the meal preparation.
School Residents fourth through eighth grade attend an on-campus school operated by the Columbus County Public School System that is exclusive for Boys and Girls Homes residents. Small class size and personalized attention help the children, especially if they are behind their peers academically. High school residents attend East Columbus High School, also a part of the Columbus County School System and some two miles away, the alternative school program in Nakina, or the GED program of Southeastern Community College.
Church Attendance Residents are required to attend church regularly and do so in the Boys and Girls Homes Leamon Rogers Memorial Chapel. The children are encouraged to pursue activities that may interest them, such as Bible study and choir.
Recreational Activities Throughout the year, all over campus, residents are encouraged to become involved in recreational events and activities: parades, cookouts, carnivals, parties, holiday celebrations, horseback riding, art, banquets and fun-filled times sure to delight and leave a child with warm and lasting memories.
Special Events Year-round special events are designed to entertain and educate. Children are introduced to the arts through on-campus visits by authors, painters, folk singers, storytellers, classical artists, and sports figures as well as activities in our 50,000 square foot, covered Exhibition Center. In addition, countless off-campus trips are taken to local fairs, festivals, sporting events, museums, and the zoo. |
